Donepezil (Generic AriceptŪ) is in a class of medications called cholinesterase inhibitors. This improves mental function (such as memory, attention, social interaction, reasoning and language abilities, and ability to perform activities of daily living) by increasing the amount of a certain naturally occurring substance in the brain. This may improve the ability to think and remember or slow the loss of these abilities in people who have AD. This is one of the most widely used drugs to treat the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. This is FDA-approved for mild, moderate, and severe stages of the disease. This was developed by Eisai Inc. and approved by the FDA in 1996. It is currently co-promoted by Eisai Inc. and Pfizer Inc.
Usage, Directions, Indication and Instructions
This is used to treat dementia (a brain disorder that affects the ability to remember, think clearly, communicate, and perform daily activities and may cause changes in mood and personality) associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD; a brain disease that slowly destroys the memory and the ability to think, learn, communicate and handle daily activities). This postpones the worsening of Alzheimer's symptoms for 6 to 12 months in about half of the people who take it. For many, the improvement is minimal, yet worthwhile. Anecdotal evidence suggests that a small percentage of people may benefit more dramatically from this med.
Adverse Reactions, Precautions and Warning
Although generally well-tolerated, the most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, increased frequency of bowel movements, vomiting, bruising, sleep disturbance, muscle cramps, loss of appetite, fatigue, and fainting. Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding; an ulcer, asthma, or obstructive pulmonary disease (chronic bronchitis or emphysema), or heart disease. People at risk for ulcers should tell their doctors because their condition may get worse.
Dosage and Administration
The 5mg is usually taken once a day, in the evening at bedtime, with or without food. This may be increased to 10mg/day after at least 1 month. The maximum does is 10mg/day. Take this at around the same time every day and take exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Important
This helps control the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease but does not cure it. Continue taking this even if you feel well. Do not stop without talking to your doctor.
Take only under doctors directions.
