Usage, Directions, Indication and Instructions

This is used to treat dementia (a brain disorder that affects the ability to remember, think clearly, communicate, and perform daily activities and may cause changes in mood and personality) in people with Alzheimer's disease (a brain disease that slowly destroys the memory and ability to think, learn, communicate and handle daily activities). This is also used to treat dementia in people with Parkinson's disease (a brain and nervous system disease with symptoms of slowing of movement, muscle weakness, shuffling walk, and loss of memory).

Adverse Reactions, Precautions and Warning

Along with its beneficial effect, this med may cause some undesirable reactions. You should tell your doctor if you are taking any other medications and if you have other medical problems. Common side effects, in addition to nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and weight loss, include diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pains, dizziness, headache, weakness, fatigue and difficulty sleeping. Some people also experienced fainting. Side effects are most likely to occur after an increase in dose and may go away with continued treatment. If they persist, however, you should tell your doctor. If you feel unwell or have any symptoms that you do not understand, or find distressing, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Dosage and Administration

Initial Dose: 1.5mg twice a day at initiation and re-initiation of therapy. If well tolerated, it may be increased after a minimum of 2wks of treatment to 3mg twice a day, subsequently to 4.5mg twice a day, up to a maximum of 6mg twice a day. If adverse effect is experienced, the daily dose should be reduced to the previous well-tolerated dose. Be taken once with your breakfast and once with your evening meal. Do NOT take two doses at once. Take only as prescribed by your doctor. Never change the dose yourself.

Important

This may improve the ability to think and remember or slow the loss of these abilities, but does not cure Alzheimer's disease or dementia in people with Parkinson's disease. Continue taking even if you feel well. Do not stop without talking to your doctor.
