Usage, Directions, Indication and Instructions

This is used as a mood stabiliser for treating people with the psychiatric illness, drug and alcohol withdrawal, depression, restless legs syndrome, diabetes insipidus, certain pain syndromes, and a disease in children called chorea and bipolar affective disorder (manic-depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods). It is particularly useful for people who experience multiple mood swings (rapid cycling). It is also used to treat trigeminal neuralgia (a condition that causes facial nerve pain). The extended-release capsules are used to treat episodes of mania (frenzied, abnormally excited or irritated mood) or mixed episodes (symptoms of mania and depression that happen at the same time).

Adverse Reactions, Precautions and Warning

You may have thoughts about suicide while taking this medication. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits. Do not miss any scheduled appointments. This may cause life-threatening allergic reactions called Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). These allergic reactions may cause severe damage to the skin and internal organs. The risk of SJS or TEN is highest in people of Asian ancestry who have a genetic (inherited) risk factor. Call your doctor immediately if you develop a rash, blisters, or a fever during your treatment.
It is important to tell your doctor what medicines you are taking, including herbal medicines and non-prescription medicines, before you start.

Dosage and Administration

Epilepsy
Adult: 100-200mg once or twice a day.
Pedia: 10-20mg/kg daily in divided dose.
1 yr: 100-200mg, 1-5yrs: 200-400mg, 5-10yrs: 400-600mg, 10-15 yrs: 0.6-1g.
Daily doses are divided and usually given 2-4 times.

Trigeminal Neuralgia:
Initially 100mg once or twice daily.
Usual maintenance dose: 400-800mg daily in 2-4 divided doses but up to 1.6g daily may be required.

Prophylaxis of manic depression:
Initially 400mg daily in divided doses but up to 1.6g daily may be required. Usual maintenance dose range is 400-600mg daily.

The regular and extended release tabs are usually taken with meals but the ER caps can be taken with or without meals.

Important

It may take a few weeks or longer before you feel the full benefit. Continue taking even if you feel well; don’t stop without talking to your doctor. If you have a seizure disorder and you suddenly stop, your seizures may become worse.
