Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) Usage, Directions, Indication and Instructions
• Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) is used to treat and prevent herpes infections of the skin, eyes, nose, and mouth in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
• Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) is used to treat oral hairy leukoplakia (condition that causes hairy white or gray-colored patches on the tongue or inside of the cheek).
• Both Oral Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) and Topical Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) is used to decrease pain and speed the healing of sores or blisters in people who have varicella (chickenpox), herpes zoster (shingles; a rash that can occur in people who have had chickenpox in the past), and first-time or repeat outbreaks of genital herpes (a herpes virus infection that causes sores to form around the genitals and rectum from time to time)
• Both Oral and Topical Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) is used to treat eczema herpeticum (a skin infection caused by the herpes virus)
• Topical Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) cream is used to treat cold sores (fever blisters; blisters that are caused by a virus called herpes simplex) on the face or lips.
Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) Adverse Reactions, Precautions and Warning
• Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) or any other medications.
• Do not forget to tell your doctor and pharmacist your medical history, what other prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take.
• Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) Dosage and Administration
• Oral Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) can be taken with or without food.
• Take Oral Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) at around the same time every day and take exactly as directed.
• Do not take more or less of Oral Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) nor use Topical Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) or take Oral Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) more often or for a longer time than prescribed by your doctor.
• Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) for Genital Herpes
Initial: Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) 200mg every 4hrs 5x a day for 10days.
• Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) for Recurrent Genital Herpes
Suppressive therapy: Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) 400mg 2x/day or 200mg every 8hrs.
• Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) as Intermittent Therapy: Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) 200mg every 4hrs 5x/day for 5 days at earliest signs of symptom of recurrence.
• Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) for Herpes Zoster
Usual dose is Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) 800mg every 4hrs 5x a day for 7-10 days.
• Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) for Chicken Pox
Adults and children: Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) 20mg/kg/dose (maximum 800mg/day) 4x/day for 5 days.
Topical Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®)
• Topical Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) is usually applied five times a day for 4 days.
• Topical Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) cream may be applied at any time during a cold sore outbreak, but it works best when it is applied at the very beginning of a cold sore outbreak, when there is tingling, redness, itching, or a bump but the cold sore has not yet formed.
• Topical Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) ointment is usually applied six times a day (usually 3 hours apart) for 7 days.
• It is best to begin using Topical Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) ointment as soon as possible after you experience the first symptoms of infection.
Important
• Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) will not cure herpes, but it can lessen the symptoms of the infection.
• Take Acyclovir (Generic Zovirax®) until you finish the prescription, even if you feel better.
• If you stop too soon or skip doses, your infection may not be completely treated or may become more difficult to treat.
