Usage, Directions, Indication and Instructions

This is used to treat herpes infections that cause shingles (herpes zoster), herpes simplex infections of the skin and mucous membranes, including genital herpes. Aside from the mentioned indications, this has further use in preventing infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) in people who have had a kidney transplant.

Adverse Reactions, Precautions and Warning

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to it or any other medications. Do not forget to tell your doctor and pharmacist what other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take. The most common effects are headache, nausea, and vomiting. And the less common side effects are diarrhea, abdominal pain, and dizziness. Notify your doctor if effects persist and worsen.
You should not take the medication if you are allergic to either acyclovir or this med.

Dosage and Administration

This may be taken with or without food. Dosages need to be reduced in patients with kidney disease.
Herpes zoster (shingles), the usual dose is 1 gm three times a day for 7 days or longer.
For an initial episode of herpes, the usual dose is 1 gm twice daily for 10 days or longer.
For the treatment of recurrent herpes, the usual dose is 500 mg twice daily for 5 days or longer.

Important

You should begin treatment at the first symptom and is most effective if started within 48 hours of the onset of rash. You should take the tablet at regular intervals and you must complete the prescribed course unless otherwise directed.
If you can see warning signs appear, start the treatment soon to prevent the sores from developing. Safe sex is still important to avoid passing the virus to the partner when used in treating genital herpes.
