• Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) is used to treat herpes infections that cause shingles (herpes zoster), herpes simplex infections of the skin and mucous membranes, including genital herpes.
• Aside from the mentioned indications, Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) has further use in preventing infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) in people who have had a kidney transplant.

Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) Adverse Reactions, Precautions and Warning

• Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) or any other medications.
• Do not forget to tell your doctor and pharmacist what other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take.
• The most common side effects of Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) are headache, nausea, and vomiting.

Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) Dosage and Administration

• Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) may be taken with or without food.

• Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) for Herpes zoster (shingles), the usual dose is 1 gm three times a day for 7 days or longer.
• Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) for an initial episode of herpes, the usual dose is 1 gm twice daily for 10 days or longer.
• For the treatment of recurrent herpes, the usual dose of Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) is 500 mg twice daily for 5 days or longer.

Important

• You should begin Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) treatment at the first symptom.
• Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) is most effective if started within 48 hours of the onset of rash.
• You should take Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) at regular intervals and you must complete the prescribed course unless otherwise directed.
• If you can see warning signs appear, start Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) treatment soon to prevent the sores from developing.
• Safe sex is still important to avoid passing the virus to the partner when Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex®) is used in treating genital herpes.
