• Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) is a synthetic (man-made) version of the principle thyroid hormone, thyroxine (T4) that is mainly used in cases where the thyroid gland of the patient cannot produce the sufficient quantities of hormone the human body requires.
• Without thyroid hormone, thyroxine (T4), the body cannot function properly, resulting in poor growth, slow speech, and lack of energy, weight gain, hair loss, dry thick skin, and increased sensitivity to cold.
• Generic and branded tablets may differ in the amount they contain, the absorption into the body, and the distribution of throughout the body.

• Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) is mainly prescribed for the treatment of patients suffering from thyroid hormone insufficiency, patients with unusual enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter) or patients with thyroid cancer.
• Make sure your doctor is aware of all your medical problems, especially heart disease, clotting disorders, diabetes, and disorders of the adrenal or pituitary glands.
• Thyroid hormone like Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) should not be used to treat obesity in patients with normal thyroid function.
Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) Adverse Reactions, Precautions and Warning
• Side effects of Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®), other than overdose symptoms, are rare.
• People who are treated with Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) may initially lose some hair, but this effect is usually temporary.
• You may have Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) allergic reaction such as a rash or hives.
• You should not be treated with Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) if you are hypersensitive to thyroid hormone and if your thyroid gland is making too much thyroid hormone
• You should not also be treated with Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) if you have had a recent heart attack; or your adrenal glands are not making enough corticosteroid hormone.
Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) Dosage and Administration
• Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) usually is taken once a day on an empty stomach, one half to one hour before breakfast.
• If you are giving Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) to an infant or child who cannot swallow the tablet, crush the tablet and mix it in 1 to 2 teaspoons of plain water.
• Give Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) mixture by spoon or dropper right away.
• Do not store Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) mixture.
• Only mix the crushed Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) with water.
• Do not mix Levothyroxine (Generic Synthroid®) with food or soybean infant formula.
