• Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®) Extended-release (long-acting) is also used in combination with other medications to treat heart failure.

Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®) Adverse Reactions, Precautions and Warning

• Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®) allergic reaction like hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
• Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®) may cause other side effects.
• Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®).
• Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®) can also cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions.
• Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
• Avoid drinking alcohol whilst on Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®), as this could increase drowsiness and dizziness.

Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®) Dosage and Administration

• Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®) comes in tablet form at 25mg, 50mg, 100mg and 200mg.
• Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®) ER (extended release), SR (sustained release), CR (controlled release) are usually taken once a day.
• Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol®) LA (long-acting) may be split, swallow the whole or half tablets whole but not to be chewed or crushed.
• In general, the maximum effect of Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol®) at any given dosage level will be apparent after 1 week of therapy.

Adults:
• The usual initial dosage of Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol®) is 25 to 100 mg daily in a single dose.
• Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol®) dosage may be increased at weekly (or longer) up to 200mg intervals until optimum blood pressure reduction is achieved.

Hypertension:
• Starting dose of Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol®) is at 25mg to 100mg daily in a single dose, whether used alone or added to a diuretic.

Angina Pectoris:
• The usual starting dosage of Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol®) is 100mg daily, given in a single dose.

Heart Failure:
• The recommended starting dose of Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol®) is 25 mg once daily for two weeks in patients with NYHA class II heart failure and 12.5 mg once daily in patients with more severe heart failure.
• The dose should then be doubled every two weeks to the highest dosage level tolerated by the patient or up to 200 mg.

Migraine prophylaxis:
• The dosage of (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol®) is 100-200 mg once daily in the morning.

Important

• Do not stop taking Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®) without talking to your doctor.
• Suddenly stopping Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®) may cause chest pain or heart attack.
• Your doctor will probably decrease your dose gradually.
• Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®) control high blood pressure and angina but does not cure them.
• Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®) Extended-release controls heart failure but does not cure it.
• Metoprolol (Generic Lopressor®, Generic Toprol XL®) may take a few weeks before you feel the full benefit.
