• Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) is used to reduce the production of uric acid in your body. Uric acid buildup can lead to gout or kidney stones.
• Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) is used to treat gout or kidney stones, and to decrease levels of uric acid in people who are receiving cancer treatment
• Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) is used sometimes to treat seizures, pain caused by pancreas disease, and certain infections.
• Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) is used sometimes to improve survival after bypass surgery
• Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) is used sometimes to reduce ulcer relapses, and to prevent rejection of kidney transplants.
Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) Adverse Reactions, Precautions and Warning
• Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) or any other medications.
• Do not forget to tell your doctor and pharmacist your medical history, what other prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take.
• Stop taking Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) and call your doctor at once if you have any signs of skin rash, no matter how mild.
• Avoid drinking alcohol. Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) can make your condition worse and cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions.
• Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) Dosage and Administration
• Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) is usually taken once or twice a day, preferably after a meal.
• Take each Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) dose with a full glass of water, and to reduce your risk of kidney stones forming, drink 8 to 10 full glasses of fluid every day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
• Take exactly as Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) was prescribed for you. Do not take in larger amounts, or take for longer than recommended by your doctor.
Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) Important
• Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) may take several months or longer before you feel the full benefit.
• Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) may increase the number of gout attacks during the first few months that you take Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®)
• Although Allopurinol (Generic Zyloprim®) will eventually prevent attacks, continue taking even if you feel well and not stop without talking to your doctor.
