Usage, Directions, Indication and Instructions
This is FDA approved to treat depression, certain types of social anxiety conditions, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in adults over age 18. It is also approved for with (obsessive-compulsive disorder) OCD in children and adolescents age 6-17 years. It is not approved for treating depression in children. This is also used sometimes to treat headaches and sexual problems.
Adverse Reactions, Precautions and Warning
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to it or any other medications. Do not forget to tell your doctor and pharmacist your medical history, what other prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take. You may have thoughts about suicide when you first, especially if you are younger than 24 years old. Inform your doctor if you have worsening symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts during the first several weeks of treatment, or whenever your dose is changed. You should know that this may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you. Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.
Dosage and Administration
Usual Dose is 50mg/day once daily. This may be increased to 200mg/day over a period of 2 wks by 50mg increments. It is usually taken in the morning or evening with or without food with a full glass of water. To treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder, this is taken once a day, either every day of the month or on certain days of the month. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Important
The time it takes to feel better is different for everyone. Some of your symptoms might start to improve within 1 to 2 weeks or it could take up to 8 weeks. Even if you don't feel better right away, it's important to keep taking your medicine as directed. No matter what your age, before you take an antidepressant, you, your parent, or your caregiver should talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treating your condition with an antidepressant or with other treatments.
