Usage, Directions and Indication
This is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as bronchitis; pneumonia; sexually transmitted diseases (STD); and infections of the ears, lungs, skin, and throat.
It is also used sometimes to treat H. pylori infection, early Lyme disease and sometimes used to prevent heart infection in patients having dental or other procedures and to prevent STD in victims of sexual assault. Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this medication for your condition.
In children, this is used to treat middle ear infection, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and strep throat.
Adverse Reactions, Precautions and Warning
Do not use this if you have ever had an allergic reaction to azithromycin or similar drugs such as erythromycin. Inform your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. The medication may cause side effects like upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, and mild skin rash. If you experience other symptoms of side effects that will not go away, call your doctor immediately. You should not take antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium within 2 hours before or after you take the tab, antacids make the tab less effective when taken at the same time.
This tab may interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills therefore other forms of contraception may be required during the treatment period.
Dosage and Administration
It is usually taken with or without food once a day for 1-5 days. To help you remember to take the tab, take it around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take this exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Important
Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.
Take this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Your prescription is probably not refillable. If you still have symptoms of infection after you finish the medication, call your doctor.
